The mercury museum is located in
the former mercury warehouse. The building dates from 1941 and is of a sound construction designed for industrial use.
The front of the building has an entrance arch with two medallions and pediment situated on a cornice.
The
central yard of the building is dedicated to the geology of the mines and has exhibits of fossils, rocks and minerals from Almadén and the surrounding area.
In the
furnace rooms, scale models are used to explain the evolution of the mercury furnaces at Almadén. Parts from the furnaces can also be seen, such as Xabeca and reverberatory containers and pipes, etc.
The
room devoted to the science of mercury shows visitors the properties of this metal, the only liquid that is denser than iron and lead. They can also see its industrial and scientific applications.
The basement is devoted to the history of the mines and shows visitors their most relevant periods. There is also a re-creation of the difficulty involved in transporting the liquid metal from Almadén to America using an ox-drawn cart and the hold of a galleon.
The refurbishment work was completed in 2006 and was co-financed by funds from the ERDF.
