The Mining Enclosures

Open to the public

Back
Built in ancient times to preserve the mining facilities, two of them can be seen today.

The San Teodoro enclosure, which contains the visitors reception centre, the mining museum, the former workshops and management building, as well as the San Teodoro and San Aquilino shafts. .

The Buitrones enclosure, which contains the metallurgy facilities. The most important features include the Mercury museum, the San Joaquín shaft, the Bustamante furnaces, the Pacific furnaces, the gate of Carlos IV, the gate of Carros and the Tejeras furnace.

The Bustamante furnaces. The San Eugenio and San Julián furnaces are the only ones remaining from the 16th that were used between 1646 and 1928. They are made of masonry work and have a cylindrical cavity separated into two compartments by a brick wall.

In 1992, they were designated assets of cultural interest and have been restored by the Instituto de Patrimonio Histórico Español.

Gate of Carlos IV. This was used as the entrance gate to the Buitrones enclosure from when it was built in 1795 during the reign of the monarch after whom it was named. It was used as an exit for the ox-drawn carts and the mule trains that transported the Mercury from Almadén to Seville from where the mercury was shipped to Central and South America.

The construction is made of brick with a lowered arch, a double pillar next to a double pilaster and a coat of arms in limestone. The coat of arms represents the royal power, is the coat of arms of the Bourbons.

The restoration work, which was completed in 2004, was carried out by the Instituto de Patrimonio Histórico Español, which belongs to the Spanish Ministry of Culture.
